The One BIG Lesson I Learned About Building a Successful Online Business After 7 Years PLUS Online!

Do you love football, (soccer if you prefer that)?

You do, right? So do I!

Now, one thing I’ve noticed whenever any team is playing is how nearly everyone who is watching the game is an ‘expert’. One common thing you’ll notice with these people, whether they are watching the game in the stadium or at home via their television sets, is the ‘expert’ tips and ‘technical’ advise they ditch out.

Whenever a player make a wrong move on the field of play resulting in some missed chances, these ‘unofficial coaches’ would say all sort of unprintable words. Most times they dish out instructions of what players should or should not do.

In fact, the way most of these self assumed experts carry themselves while watching the players struggling to make good their act, you’d think they will perform wonders if they are given the opportunity to be in the field of play. But give it a try and you would only regret the result!

Succeeding online and playing football

Now, I know you’d be wondering what has the Web Income Journal has to do with football game. No, my concern here is not about playing football but about the attitude of many who want to make money online.

You see, the fact is when you are on the outside you could easily fall for the notion that building a successful online business is an easy thing. This is why many of us were pulled in by the smooth talk of online marketers who presented making money online as something you can achieve simply by putting up a website or blog.

But all that was only a DREAM!

I’m being honestly frank here!

If you have been online long enough then you would agree that internet marketing is not about working in your pajamas, even when you could choose to do so. It’s also not about loafing it out at the beach with your lap while the money roll in!

One thing you must understand is that those figures that’s being flashed at you in those sales letters are results of long and tedious days and nights of toil and sweat. Sometimes, even years.

So, if you desire success online you should be ready to put the investment of time and effort.  Never think success online come simply by sheer luck. You don’t just casually ease into earning millions on the net.

As I mentioned a few days ago, the Web Income Journal blog, as it’s today, will be 7years in a few days time. In this post I want to share with you the essential ingredient I’ve found to be a must-have if you want to build a successful online business.

Online Business Success

I must say that of all that’s required to make a success of your online dream, this top the list…

Alright, let’s get it on…

The Essential Ingredient for a Successful Online Business

Have a Right and Healthy Mindset

As I’ve mentioned earlier, many of us started online with a wrong mindset. We had some funny ideas about making money online. But I can tell you today that was really FAULTY foundation. I’m only here today because I jettisoned that mindset after I realized the problem with it. And, I’m grateful I did else I would have packed up my acts a long time ago!

One thing I can say is that over the years there are many bloggers that have interacted with this blog at one time or the other. Over time I have discovered that many of these blogs have dropped out of the blogosphere. Many of these blogs had an “appearance of success” when they were up. But as you’ll agree with me, you don’t ditch a winning team, or do you?

I dare say that of the many that are dropping out of sight, most got it wrong somewhere. And, in most cases a wrong mindset is the culprit!

Now I must say I may not have the qualifications to make such a grave statement but after about 7+ years of being online, a period within which I have tried my hands in different online business models – niche sites, affiliate marketing, bum marketing, article marketing, blogging and even Kindle self-publishing, I think I can read the handwriting on the wall whenever I see one!

So my intention in this post is not to sound pompous but to help you see the truth so that you can achieve your dreams online. If you truly want to escape being one of the dotcom failures, work on your mindset. Period!

Online success strategy

Wondering what really is the right and healthy mindset for succeeding online?

To help you understand this let’s look at it in the areas of what it IS and what it is NOT.

What it IS:

1.  A right and healthy mindset IS the willingness to work as hard and as long as is necessary to achieve the goals that YOU have set.

2.  A right and healthy mindset IS the willingness to take the time to make a good, solid business plan that is based upon sound business principles.

And what it is NOT:

1.  A right and healthy mindset is NOT the belief that success will be easy, quick or painless.

2.  A right and healthy mindset is NOT just jumping in feet first and hoping for the best. The best that can happen under those circumstances is that you’d get out with nothing more than two cents to your name.

From the above you’d understand that those who believe that they can build a successful internet based business without putting in the required time or effort are simply doomed to failure from the very start.

I’m sure you don’t want to set up your online business to self-destruct!

Again from what is presented as the right and healthy mindset, you will notice that there’s the need for setting goals and making a business plan based on sound business principles. This is because building a business online is pretty much the same as building a business off-line, with a little difference in approach. It is important therefore that if you lack any knowledge in the area of your business focus, never hesitate to get it whatever the cost.

Of course, a right and healthy mind set may not automatically guarantee success online but note this very carefully, a wrong and unhealthy or unrealistic mindset will most assuredly, as the day follows the night, guarantee failure! So get the right mindset because this the first cornerstone that must be laid if a successful online business is to be built.

3 Spooky Business Advice That’ll Kill Your Business Even Before You Begin!

If you have been online for some time now you definitely have come across a whole lot of and advice.

The unfortunate thing is that many of these are actually killing many online businesses even before they get the chance of getting off the ground!

With well over 7 years of trying different things online and having subscribed to hundreds of IM newsletters, I can say with confidence that I’ve not only heard these things a number of times but that I’ve also seen and experienced the devastating effects of such “bad” advice given with the intention of helping newbie online entrepreneurs.

And so, if you’ve been struggling with your online business my advice is this: take a look again at the type of advice you “swallowed” line, hook and sinker. Chances are you may have fallen a victim of one of these spooky business advice.

3 Business Startup Advice You Must Ignore Right Now!

So, let’s take some careful look at the top 3 of these pieces of advice:

1. Do What You Love And The Money Will Follow
Do what you love and the money wil come - a bad business advice!

You have heard this a thousand times, right?

Indeed, this one top the list of business startup advise that you hear every day on the net. Read any blog post on how to online or simply do a search on Google and you will see this being flung left right and center!

Unfortunately, because this is parroted all over the place many think it is the one truth to making money online. But as much as it sounds reasonable, you must understand that following your passion or doing what you love is not the key to succeeding in any business.

The fact is your business or your product is not about you but about your prospects. It is about what pains they have and how you can heal those pains.

Starting a business based SOLELY on what you love is simply laying a shaky foundation for that business because the success of any business is determined by what sells and how well it sells.

So, instead of spending time and resources trying to figure out what you love and building your business around that, spend time rather in figuring out the pains people are looking to heal online and then find a way of providing a solution for those pains using your skills and knowledge while being passionate about it.

This is worth remembering:

There are millions of starving artists, writers, actors, etc in the world who spend their entire lives doing what they love for a pittance. The better thing to do therefore is to choose a business that has good potential for profitability and then position yourself as a loving solution provider. “

In order words, LOVE providing solutions instead of trying to provide solutions that you love!

Okay, maybe you will want some other person’s opinion on this, right? No problem. Read this article Forbes.com or this one from Profitguide.com.

If you’re still not satisfied with those but you TRULY want to do what you love for the money to follow, then I advice that you get this Kindle ebook:

But then, here’s a review by someone who took that route:

kindle book review

Alright, nuff said…got to move on!

2. Look For An Untapped Niche If You Want A Successful Business!

Is there really any untapped niche out there?

This is another big one!

Are you not surprised that every blog post you’ve read on starting an online business simply re-echo this same advice over and over again? But have you really stopped to think about this?

Now, here is the simple truth…

Starting a business in an untapped niche is simply a business startup advice from the formative ages of the internet. It is only being re-echoed and circulated by those who really do not know where the internet is right now.

Some 10 or 12years ago that advice may be feasible but today it is simply obsolete!

Truth be told, there is no profitable niche today that is “untapped”. For every niche that is worth starting a business in, there are a million webpages already targeting that niche!

Go and check on Google.com today to confirm this!

I have done extensive product and market research in the past 5 years or so, and I have come to realize that any niche out there with high search volume but with very low competition most times indicate you are looking at a market with no potential for profitability!

And so, if you are looking to start a business in an “untapped niche” you will never start or if you do find one, you may never really make any money from that niche!

Competition is actually a sign that a market is profitable. So, let the competition point you in the direction where others are already making it.

Your assignment is to find a way of breaking into this “competitive” market and getting your own share of the cake. A little twist here and there can do this for you.

3. You Don’t Need Money To !

Make money online advice

Ok, I admit it.

I fell for this one big time when I started!

In fact, my first website was dedicated to teaching newbie internet marketers how to make money online without spending a dime!

Yes, make money without any form of investment.  But the irony of it all was the fact that on that same site I was promoting affiliate products which I expected the site visitors to purchase!

Foolish approach to running a business you would say.

But the fact is, back then you could really make money without spending a dime! I actually started that way. I had no website when I started. All I had were:

(a) a free account with Ezinearticles.com; and

(b) a couple of accounts with some affiliate programs

The strategy I was using then was that I wrote informative articles, submitted them to ezinearticles.com and then link from the resource box to the affiliate products I was promoting. Of course, those were the days when ezinearticles.com allowed affiliate links in the articles published on their directory.

We used to call this Bum in those days!

But truth be told, those days are gone and gone for good.

If you want to build a business online today you definitely need a website or blog of your own. And for these, you need a domain name, a webhost and some other things like an autoresponder to build a list.

All of these require some investment of money.

And so, if you are still listening to such business advice that you don’t need to invest a cent to make money online you are actually setting yourself up for failure. I’ve come across many who offer such advice but today they have become some statistics in the DotCom waste bin!

Yes, you can start on a shoestring budget but if you truly desire a business that is worthwhile, you need an investment of money.

Besides, remember time is money. Give or take, you’re investing money whether you know it or not!

Conclusion

It is true that how much success you are able to achieve online depends on your mindset most of the time. Also, since what you hear and read online determine to a great extent your beliefs and expectations, it is important that you guard jealously what hear and read.

There are of course other spooky business advice out there but learning to avoid these ones will see you quickly breaking through the barriers to your online success.

Your turn: Is there any business advice you’ve heard that has negatively affected your business progress thus far? If there is why not share with us in your comments below?

4 Lucrative Home Based Online Business Ideas You Can Start Today

Earlier I shared 18 small business ideas you can start with little or no money. If you are thinking of starting not just an , then check out that post.

In this post I want to share with you 4 online business ideas that you can start right now. While the earlier post dealt mainly with businesses you can run offline, these ideas are geared towards those who would rather start an online business.

In recent times, online businesses have become very popular as more and more people are looking online to beat the economic meltdown. Unfortunately, many who want to go this way are finding it difficult to make a headway because of the various business opportunities out there.

Truth is, many of what is being laundered online as are nothing but scams perfected by con-artists. This article is therefore a simple guide to help you with the different online home business models out there.

Lucrative online business ideas

Online Home Business Categories

After about 10 years online, I can say the different types of online businesses can be divided into three broad categories. These are:

  1. Selling products or services to retail customers
  2. ; and
  3. Business-to-business selling.

When you are looking at creating and therefore, you’ll want to look at what your specialty is and then create your business around one of these three broad categories.

If you decide on selling to retail customers, you will have to find a way to sell your products or services in a different manner than many of the other retail websites out there. If it is selling on eBay, then you’ll have to find a wholesale distributor of products from whom you can procure your products at a great discount. If you already work within the business-to-business forum, this will be an easy transition for you.

Suggested Home Based Online Business Ideas

Start an online business

The following home based online business opportunities all fall into these three categories. Any of them will help you start and build your own online home business.

1. Freelance Writing

The first one that we will look at is to become a freelance writer. This is a very good way for you to if you need some part-time income. While you can make it a full-time venture, I wouldn’t advise that. This is because it is not only tedious but also time consuming. However, it can be a great way to start and get your feet wet working online. The experience gained can come handy in creating something bigger

2. Building Niche Sites

Another way you can work in creating a home-based online business opportunity is to work on building a website around a particular theme or niche. Your source of income for these types of websites is mainly affiliate products and maybe selling advertising.

These types of websites do not require a great deal of money upfront. If you commit to doing this, it can build up into a very nice part-time or full-time income in no time. Of course, you may not see instantaneous results but if you take time every day to work on developing your websites you’ll be pleased with the end result.

One of the keys to succeeding with this business is in finding cheap keywords and creating your website content around them. Also you will need to build backlinks from other similar sites. By doing this you’ll be setting yourself up to have a high page rank, which is critical to ranking on the search engines.

Sites built this way can easily drive organic traffic from the search engines. Google adWords is another great way of driving traffic to your niche websites. This is another powerful way of creating an online business.

3. Selling on eBay

Another way you can build and create an online business is through eBay. This is an area which was particularly hot several years ago and still remains a solid business proposition. Many over the years have been able to make a full-time income on eBay.

You will need to find a wholesaler where you can get products at a discount to sell on eBay. The general idea when selling on eBay is to find a drop-shipper. A drop-shipper is either a manufacturer, a retailer, or a wholesaler to whom you can transfer customer orders and shipment details so that they can ship the goods directly to the customer. You will simply need to buy the product at the wholesale price and then make money on the difference between the amount you bought the product and what you sell the product for on eBay.

Using a wholesaler allows you to focus on selling the product without worrying about inventory. You do not need to worry about any sort of shipping or back-end but you will want to make sure that everything gets sent out. If there are problems with shipments, the customer will be coming back to you and not to the wholesaler.

For the best wholesale shipping directory on the Internet go to worldwidebrands.com.

4.

This is another good way of building a lucrative online business. One quick way to find affiliate programs is by visiting www.affiliateprograms.com. There are different categories for you to choose from. Some of the categories you would want to focus on are finance and investment, food and beverage, automotive, and health and fitness.

Ensure you read and understand the listed sites because each affiliate program have their own terms.  You will want to visit the website to learn more about what they do since you will be spending a great deal of your time promoting them.

Also, with each of these affiliate programs, you should consider how much you would be making by selling each of these. You’ll probably find several programs that seem interesting to you so see which one peaks your interest and pays well and head for that opportunity.

Conclusion

The internet has given us unimaginable options of making money doing what we love. With the right knowledge and guidance you can turn any of these options into a lucrative business. Research any of these online business ideas and with some creativity you can profit with the one of your choice.

Many small business entrepreneurs do not see a budget as being important. Of course, this may be as a result of ignorance or sheer laziness. The fact is that a business budget is something you must commit to preparing as a small business entrepreneur. This is for several reasons amongst which include:

How Do You Create A Business Budget?

If you’re a small business owner you don’t have to hire some expensive CPA even if you have no prior knowledge of how to create a business budget. No matter the type of business you are running, your budget can be created to suit you and your business. And, the good news is, you can do this by yourself. You simply need to understand the core components that go into making an effective business budget.

Creating Your Small-Business Budget Step by Step:

Step 1: Design a spreadsheet with a column for Income, Expenditure, Budgeted amount and Actuals respectively – For every income and expenditure item you will need to record the budgeted amount and then the actuals.

how to create a business budget

Step 2: Determine and enter your expected income – Do this after taking a look at your past actuals. If however you are just starting out and do not have previous figures to work with, simply take a look at what the average figure is in your line of business and use that. Please note that the success of your budget will mostly depend on your projected or estimated income. You must therefore be realistic and rational when determining your expected income.

Step 3: Categorize your expenses – While you may decide to put your expenditure items into different categories, the simple way to go is to divide them into Fixed Costs and Variable Costs. Expenses that will be entered in the Variable Costs column are those that change in proportion to the activity of your business. Items like electricity and wages. While items like rent goes into the Fixed Cost column.

Step 4: Calculate and post your actuals at the set time – This may be weekly, monthly or quarterly depending on your choice. Using your daily figures calculate the actual figures for both income and expenditures and post these in the Actuals column.

Step 5: Calculate and analyze the differences between budgeted amounts and the actuals – There is the need to continuously monitor your budget. You need to compare your budget with what actually happened. Is there a difference between the actual numbers and the budgeted figures? To do this, create two ‘difference’ columns – one as a figure and one as a percentage. With these two columns you will be able to analyze the budget.

This is important as it will help you monitor your business progress and ensure that your finances are not being wasted on unessential items. Also where the business is overpaying for economic resources, this will be revealed so that measures can be taken to remedy the situation.

How To Effectively Use A Blog To Boost Your Home Based Business Success!

So you have dreams of having a successful home based online business, right? And to actualize your dreams you have setup your business site and you’re passionately working on your promotional strategies while looking forward to hordes of traffic flooding your site, right?

But, hold it for a moment. How about a blog, did you add a blog to your home business website? You did? Oh, that’s great!

Fact is if you’re running an online business and you do not have a blog added to your website then you are like a swimmer is swimming against the current! No matter what you may have heard before now, simply setting up an ecommerce website does not guarantee that you will have clients and customers standing in line for your offers. You will need to use different strategies to drive enough traffic to guarantee your business success. This is one reason why you need to add a blog to your home business site because it’s simply an incredible online marketing tool right now.

Now, despite the many gains of adding a blog to your home based business site, there is a big problem faced by those who decide to add a blog to their business sites. This problem is that of concentrating more efforts on updating the blog to the detriment of their business!

Online business marketing strategies

This is really a big problem. For example, in running your blog you will need to constantly write highly engaging content, read and reply to readers’ comments, visit other blogs and post comments, be on the social media sites to connect with other bloggers, join blogging communities to connect with others, etc.

While all of these are necessary, the unfortunate thing is that you have just enough time to do all of these and also focus on other areas of running your home based business, especially if you are a solopreneur. And this has resulted in many abandoning their main businesses and becoming “emergency bloggers” without any real goal for their blogs! This is really pathetic and I’m sure you don’t want to be in this situation.

In this post I want to offer you a few tips on how you can effectively incorporate a blog into your business website without endangering your main business. Used well, these tips will definitely help you gain an edge over your competitors who are not blogging.

So, if you are ready, let’s boost your website success with these business blogging tips!

1. Determine Your Business Objectives

Once you’re convinced of the potentials of a blog the first thing you need to take care of before starting that blog is to determine your business objectives and how a blog will be of help in achieving those objectives.

This is definitely important because the key to having a successful blog as a business owner is keeping your goals clear and concrete at every step of your blogging adventure. It can be all too easy to get sidetracked, especially if you are just learning about the exciting possibilities of blogging technology. But if you want your blog to succeed you need to stay focused.

Write up a plan for how often you will update your business blog; how you will promote the blog, how you will retain your blog readership, and of course other areas of your blogging adventure. Once you have these set out, you must ensure that you stick to this plan in everything you do.

2. Get a Good Blog Design

When you use a free blog platform like blogger.com you’re provided with pre-designed templates. But it is a wise thing to go for paid blog services like wordpress.org if you truly want the benefits of a business blog. Using a free service takes the control of your blog from you. In fact, the blog is not yours as the hosting service can pull it down at any time. But if you opt for paid blog service (my advice is go for wordpress.org), you’ll need to get a good designer to design and layout your blog to match your company’s identity and needs.

3. Choose Your Blog Topics with Care

Of course, this should not be a problem since you’ve determined your business and blogging objectives in the first place. You just need to have a line-up of topics you want for your blogs but be sure they are in consonance with your business objectives. Strive to be consistent with your topic all the time. That does not mean you shouldn’t blog about general and unrelated topics that have broad appeal. This could sometimes make your blog more popular. But remember, your blog is there not on its own but a tool for marketing your business.

4. Understand the Do’s And Don’ts of Blogging

There are several blogs out there dedicated to teaching people the dos and don’ts of blogging. Please do READ them! Also include in your reading, blogs that are consumer-based in order to give you ideas on running your business blog. Remember that legal issues are sometimes involved in blogging; it is safer to include disclaimers and limitations of liabilities. Create blogging policies and schedule updates regularly.

5. Strive To Hold On To Your Readers

Update your content regularly and keep it relevant and fresh. Avoid outright marketing on your blog or you will shy away your readers. Learn how to make your business blog pull in your readers without necessary sounding like a salesman. In all you do always reinforce your company’s core values.

6. Use the Right Methods to Promote Your Business Blog

Actively promote your business blog by submitting your blogs to blog search sites and directories. Your blog is like a setup booth in the biggest trade show on earth today. Marketing possibilities are just around the corner waiting to strike your sale scales up. Be sure that your blog contain valuable and exclusive information and ensure that it is constantly updated to keep readers popping in.

Use effective keyword phrases to generate high ranking status in the SERPs. In this way, you have better chances of people finding your business website through your blog. Remember more traffic means more potential sales.

7. Listen to Your Readers

Regularly monitor your blog traffic through implementing good stats and monitoring tools like Google Analytics. Read readers’ comments, measure your results by what they are saying and if necessary make the needed adjustments. First impressions matters and your blog design plays an important factor here. You can always play with your blog design but remember that whatever design you decides on agree with your company’s identity.

Conclusion

Using a blog to promote your home based business is not different in most ways from making money blogging. However, business blogging has its own unique pitfalls. If you must successfully include a blog in your home business marketing strategy ensure that you have a clear indication of what you want. Put the above tips into use and never forget that your business blog is simply a marketing tool for your home business website.

Frankly, Are You Building A Business Or A Blog?

Sometime ago I wrote a post titled: Are You a Blogger or an Entrepreneur Who Blogs? In that post I did gave reasons why you should not consider yourself simply as a blogger but an entrepreneur. Unfortunately, it does appear that not many people are really listening to these things.

Since writing that post I have seen a whole lot of new bloggers join the blogging bandwagon while many others have abandoned ship! I still believe that many who have shipwrecked their blogging dreams did so not because they do not have the passion for blogging but because they have approached their blogging career from a wrong angle.

build a business and not a blog!

Don’t Just Build A Blog; Build A Business!

I have mentioned this severally but I will never stop talking about it until I see more bloggers put it into use. Truth is, when you ask the average blogger if they are really building a business the ready answer is yes!

But think about this:

  • Can you really say you are in business when you don’t have a product?
  • Are you in business when you don’t have a target market?

Indeed, these are just the basics of building a business. But how many bloggers can readily point to their blogs and say, this is my product or target audience?  Now, if you cannot do that how can you really say you are in business?

You must understand that blogs, as we know them today were initially setup by internet marketers as traffic generating tools for their online business sites. Blogs were not set up initially to make money by themselves but as marketing tools. So, looking at your blog as your business today is really a wrong approach to blogging because a business without a valuable product, a target audience who wants that product and a platform to present that product to the target audience is not really a business.

So, How Do You Really Build A Business And Not Just A Blog?

I love using the analogy of building a house whenever I talk about building a business. This is because building a business is similar in many ways to building a house.

There are different steps involved. From the foundation stage to the roofing stage, a lot of planning and effort is required. Besides, the type and size of the house will determine the depth of the foundation. The higher the structure you desire the deeper the foundation you will need to prepare.

The following are a few tips on how to build a business using your blog.

1. Decide From the On-Set What Direction to Take

It’s unfortunate that there are many people online who want to jump into the blogging bandwagon without any preparation. To this people the wise saying, “look before you leap” has no meaning. If your blog is going to be your online business then it is important that you get a clear idea what direction you want to go. Set your goal from the beginning and then run with it!

2. Be Creative But Don’t Seek To Re-Invent the Wheel!

Every one of us has a creative flare in him/her and your blog is definitely a place you will want to show your creativity. It is your platform and you’re free to run it any way you want. You’ve the freedom to post whatever you want. Indeed, this is good. However, instead of being too concerned with your creativity, it will be of great help to you if you’ll rather seek out what is already working and then building on it. Study what successful business strategies the experts are using and never hesitate to be a copycat if need be. Your focus should be on taking what you have learned and modifying it to suit the needs of your business.

3. Get Help through Mentor(s)

Do you really need a mentor to build and run a blog? The answer to that question might be a “yes” or a “no” depending on what you really want. Is your blog going to be a platform for your every day ramblings or you really want to build something worthwhile? What experience do you have about running a business? Do you have any formal training and skills on business management? Your answer to any of these questions will determine if you will want to go for a mentor or not. But the wise route is to seek for help when you deem it necessary.

4. Be Financially Committed

Setting up a WordPress blog could be done without any real financial commitment. But the fact is, if you desire to really build a business with your blog, committing some financial investments into the business is a must. Never be contented with just running your business on freebies. Invest in the right tools. Pay for the knowledge when necessary. One thing you must know is that when you are financially committed your motivation for success will go up and this will help you to put in more effort into building the business of your dream.

5. Remember To Stay Green

The internet business world is an ever changing one. It is a dynamic market. To keep abreast with the latest ideas and trends you need to invest in yourself through trainings. Whenever possible, attend seminars. A single new idea picked up from such trainings could transform your business. Of course, simply acquiring new information and learning new ideas is not enough. To really see these ideas and knowledge come to fruition you will need to put them into action and by taking action you will always be open to more new ideas thereby keeping yourself on the green lane!
