3 Top Tips to Uncover the Right Keywords to Rank #1 on Google

If you’re looking to drive passive traffic to your website or blog one thing you’ll want to focus on is SEO. Search engine optimization is definitely great.

However, it could be time consuming and slow to produce the desired results. To ensure that you achieve the best you’ll need to do a lot of research, content writing and of course, backlinking to get on the first page of the search engines.

Guess how much money that one keyword makes me?

Little to nothing.


Because I picked the wrong keyword to rank number one for.

Hey everyone, I’m Neil Patel, and today I’m gonna share with you how to find the right keywords to rank number one on Google for.

The first tip I have for you is go put in your competitor URL, in Semrush. What Semrush will show you is your most popular pages, that your competitors are getting getting traffic for.

This will give you ideas of what your competitors are doing. If your competitors are bigger than you, they probably know what they’re doing, and they’re probably going after keywords and traffic, that’s converting into leads and sales.

You wanna make sure you look at your strategy before you come up with your own. Once you’ve figured out their most popular pages, go take those pages and go put them into Ahrefs.

Ahrefs will show you how many links each of those pages have, and you know what the hardest thing is, is to build links?

What you wanna do is go look for the most popular pages that has the least amount of links. That means those are the pages you should be focusing on first. It’ll give you ideas on all the keywords that your competitors are ranking for when they don’t have a ton of backlinks.

That’ll give you idea of the ones you should be targeting first, ’cause not only will they drive you a lot of traffic, but they’re the lease competitive because you don’t have to build backlinks.

The second tip I have for you is use Google Search Console. Did you know that Google gives you a free tool that helps you rank number one? Yes, it’s called Google Search Console. It breaks down all of your rankings, the key words that your pages are getting traffic for, and even the positioning as page 1, page 2, page 3, the six spot on page one, right? It breaks down exactly where you’re ranking.

Now the cool part about Google Search Console is when you dive deep into each of your pages using the search analytics, it shows you all of the impressions that you’re getting for keywords that you’re on the bottom of page one for. The reason you wanna go after the keywords that you’re at the bottom of page one for, it’s way easier to rank number one for a keyword, that you’re already on the first page for, versus going after a brand new keyword that you’re not even in the top hundred for.

Going after a brand new keyword that you’re not even in the top hundred for, is a lot more work than going after one that you’re already on the bottom of page one for.

While you realize that Google Search Console is that you rank for a lot of long tail keywords at the bottom of page one, that you’re not even trying to go after, but yet they drive traffic, and they convert visitors into customers.

So once you have those keywords, you wanna look at them, and Google Search Console shows you all these keywords. You wanna then go to your landing page, and make sure that those keywords are are in your title tag, your meta description, your heading tag, and within the content of your page. By doing that, you’ll slowly start increasing your rankings for those pages that you’re at the bottom of page one for.

The last tip I have for you to finding amazing keywords is to use Google Trends. It’s another free tool by Google. It breaks down keyword traffic from web images, news.

This breaks down what keywords are climbing in popularity, and you wanna go after the keywords that aren’t popular yet, but are climbing.

Foe example, Apple has a ton iPhones, right? I don’t know what’s the next one they’re gonna release, but let’s say it’s the iPhone 100. If they’re gonna release the iPhone 100, you wanna talk about it before everyone else is talking about it, because the moment you’re one of the first adopters, one of the factors that Google has when it comes to rankings is time.

It’s hard to outrank older pages. It’s not impossible, it’s just harder, so why not be one of the first people to blog about new terms that aren’t popular yet. So, let’s say the iPhone 100 is coming out. You can be blogging about it. You can be blogging about iPhone 100 cases, iPhone 100 apps, new features that they have, and even if you don’t know ’em all, just blog about the ones you do know about. You could even make your own predictions. Let’s say you don’t even know anything about the iPhone 100.

You could be writing articles about huh, here’s my 10 predictions for the iPhone 100. Even if they’re wrong, that’s okay. You’re not lying to people. As long as you’re taking really good educated guesses, and providing amazing content, people won’t have issues.

So write about new upcoming keywords, because you’re not gonna get traffic from them right away, but in two, three months, or even a year, you’re gonna be dominating, because no one else went after those keywords before you did. Just think about green tea, and acai berries, and all of those hot crazy nutrition terms. Yes, they’re really popular now, and they’re buzz words, but back in the day, no one was really looking at them.

That way you’re not wasting your time writing articles on stuff that won’t be popular.

Keyword Research Tools: Are They Really Important For SEO?

The world of search engine optimization is a vast and, most times, complicated one. There are many rules and techniques that one must follow to get the desired results. And there are also many tools that SEO newbies and experts alike use each day. Of these tools, keyword research tools are perhaps the most used of all.

However, some naysayers suggest keyword research tools aren’t that important for search engine optimization. But come to think of it, is that not like saying engine oil isn’t necessary for your car?

Of course, I have heard many (and also read many articles) that tend to portray the view that even using keywords in our content is nothing but a waste of time. Their argument? Google has evolved to the stage where search engine spiders now know more about your content and what people are searching for!

As much as I don’t dispute the fact that Google has “evolved” significantly in the past few years I still believe a “splash” of keywords here and there will greatly help the search engines understand better what your content is all about. Don’t forget that the search engines are like some secretary who has control over a huge volume of documents neatly filed away in carbinets (indexed content). To retrieve any of these content this imaginary secretary definitely need some form of tag (in this case keywords).

This is actually the way I look at keywords or keyword phrases when using them in content. The search engine spiders have improved over the years but still need you to give them something to help them identify your content so they can know where to “file” (index) away your content. And of course, whenever, someone searches using something similar in their queries, the search engines will know which content to retrieve and present to them!

Sure that makes the whole thing much understandable, right?

Now, if that is the case why should anyone say keyword research tools are not important for SEO? Look at the market today and you will see that there are many free and premium keyword research tools around. Is that not enough to convince you that these tools are very useful?

Most keywords/phrases are useless even when they have high search results. Many others are not TRUE searches by your target audience (potential customers) but research keywords being used by other SEOs. In fact, no keyword tool will be able to tell you this except you use your mind and your knowledge of the target market.

2. How Best To Use Your Keywords

Every market has its own nuances. When doing keyword research the business context must be considered. Your keyword tool cannot do this for you. You need your mind and your business knowledge to decide on which keywords to use or not to use. If your business knowledge is limited in a particular market, your ability to make the right decision on how best to use your target keywords will be limited. This is one reason why you should focus on areas you have some knowledge in. This way, you will be able to apply your understanding of the circumstances to good use.

3. Structuring Your Keywords

One of the purposes of your keyword research is to help you in structuring your website. But the keyword tool cannot directly do this for you. You’ll need your knowledge of the market to decide, is this keyword really valuable? Are people simply using it to look for more information or are they in buying mode? How much will the keyword impact on your profitability?

It is only the knowledge of your target market and applying your mind to analyze the keywords that can help you effectively answer these questions.

5. What Are They Really Searching For?

Another thing which keyword tools cannot directly tell you is the intent of the prospect. Though this is similar to #4 above however, you can understand this from carefully studying the keyword structure. Many people know about long tail keywords but only a few truly know that every long tail keyword phrase has 3 parts to it. These are the head, the modifier and the tail.

While the keyword tool can give you the string of words which you term as long tail keywords, it is your responsibility to “unravel” the intent of the searcher. You can easily do this by understanding the modifier in the long tail keyword string.

For example, the keyword: “marketing tactics online” is different from “marketing tactics critic online.” The focus of these two is not the same. Someone searching with the first phrase is definitely looking for tactics to market your product/service online while the one using the second phrase is not looking for marketing tactics but something else! Also someone searching for “discounts” or “offers” is definitely different from someone who uses the modifier “luxury!”

Marketing takeaway

Keyword tools are very important if you must succeed with your search engine optimization strategies. But most importantly, you need your mind and business knowledge of the target market if you must know which of the keywords to use and how to effectively use them. This is the only guarantee that your marketing content will achieve your most wanted response!

Is Google External Keyword Tool About to be Laid to Rest?

Do you depend on the free Google external keyword tool for your keyword research?

Then this will interest you.

You’ll agree with me that the Google external keyword tool is one tool that SEOs and webmasters in general will not want to ignore with a wave of the hand. Despite the fact that there are many paid keyword research tools which you can use to do a faster job when doing keyword research the Google external keyword tool is simply a darling, whether you are an experienced or a newbie SEO!

Personally, I’m a big advocate of this keyword research tool. My preference for it is not because it is the best in the market but for the simple reason that Google, being the biggest and most popular search engine on the net right now, have more data that you can use for your keyword selection.

This fact is attested to by the many paid and free keyword research tools that use data from the external keyword tool.

So, you can imagine my surprise when, a couple of days ago while doing keyword research for the ongoing niche site challenge I saw something that caught my attention. Right on the keyword tool page there is this notice:

“In the coming months, the external Keyword Tool will no longer be available. To get keyword ideas, sign in to your AdWords account and try Keyword Planner.”

Google External Keyword Tool going? As you can see the notice is very clear: the external keyword tool will no longer be available in the coming months!

And what more?

Google wants you to create a Google Adwords account and try their Keyword Planner if you want to have access to the keyword tool!

As you do know a Google Adwords account points to one thing, spending some money on Google’s Pay Per Click (PPC) program which means you’ll need to make some money for Google as an advertiser! You can say Google’s business acumen at play again!

Ok, for now you don’t need to spend money as a Google advertiser for you have a Google AdWords account. If you have a Gmail account (and who don’t have one these days when Google has tactically propelled us to have a Google plus profile?) you can login with that info right now and have access to the Keyword Planner for free.

But the question is, for how long will Google keep it open to everyone for free?

That is definitely a question that will be answered in nearest future. And please note that in that notice, Google said, “sign in to your AdWords account and TRY Keyword Planner.” (EMPHASIS MINE!) But that actually appears to be telling us that we are only trying out the tool, something else may be coming! 🙂

The External Keyword Tool vs The Keyword Planner!

It will interest you to know that the Google external keyword tool and the Keyword Planner don’t actually work the same. While you will be able to still conduct your keyword research within the keyword planner, the purpose of that keyword research within the Keyword Planner is focused on anticipating demand for topics related to your products and services. This means you will need to take some different approach when running a keyword research with that tool.

Additionally, the Keyword Planner can also help you research your keyword ideas while giving you the ability to estimate the potential traffic.

In this regard one will say Google is now giving us more, since you can use the insights from the Keyword Planner to optimize your existing website, blog and social content as well as inspire new content topics.


But again, the question is: will Google give all these for free forever? While I cannot answer that question with a definite “yes” or “no” I think we may yet receive some more news from Google about this in the coming months!

But then we can rightly say right now, RIP Google Reader and to the Google external keyword tool we may say, may this not be your death toll! 🙂

Choosing a Profitable Niche – A Practical Guide!

In my previous post I mentioned that choosing the right niche is crucial to succeeding with your niche site. In that post, I gave the criteria I normally use when researching a niche market and then promised to also give you a practical guide on how to pick a profitable niche. In this post I want to fulfill that promise.

Where Do You Look For Profitable Niches?

The truth is if you do not know where to begin your research, you will waste a lot of time running around! Now, I must say for your niche site to meet the criteria we set out you must stay away from anything “internet marketing” or “make money online”! Instead go for real, tangible products!

Why Real, Tangible Products?

There are lots of reasons but for this post I will simply say when you build you niche site around real, tangible products, you would be selling physical products and not some theoretical concepts. You would be delivering something of actual, tangible value to your customers and of course you don’t need to grabble with those pushy persuasion techniques you see on Clickbank.com!

Besides, building your niche site around physical products agrees greatly with the basic principle we are working with which is:

1.    Build a niche site that is optimized for the search engines…
2.    So, when a potential customer goes to the search engine and searches for a product…
3.    Your niche site shows up…
4.     The potential customer clicks to visit your site, looks around and then follows your affiliate link to the product site and there, make purchases…
5.    And then, you get your commission!

It’s that simple and honest, too!

You don’t have to use some underhand marketing tactics or some pushy salesmanship to “hand twist” the visitor because with physical products, the value of the product is obvious to the buyer already!

So, Where Do You Look For Profitable Physical Products?

Here are some good places to look: Amazon.com, ebay.com, Overstock.com, Rakuten.com (buy.com) and of course Google.com/shopping. For this guide, I’m going to use Amazon.com and a few other free online tools to show you how to pick a profitable niche.

So let’s begin.

Step #1: What Is Already Selling Out There?

For this step I could start either by first going to Amazon.com to see what is already selling there or I could use Google keyword research tool to know what others are looking for.

If you want to start with Amazon.com and work backward, what you simply do is visit the site and then specify “Books” to search. Then enter a niche you desire to target (you must have known this). Take a look at the results.   The number of books written on the subject at Amazon.com is an indication of how much that market spends on the topic. When you see people spending money, you have a potentially profitable niche!

Once you confirm that (1) The niche is targeted enough and (2) The niche is spending money, your next move is to know if the niche is big enough. From there you have to go on and use any keyword research tool of your choice.

For this guide, I’m working the other way round, starting with keyword research first and then going on to Amazon.com!

Step #2: Where Do I Look?

Here I’m assuming that I do not know what niche to target. So, I’ll start by using one of the “discovery keywords” I mentioned in the previous post – “how do you stop.”

I took that and entered it into Google’s search box and received the following suggestions:

Notice the two phrases I underlined. I will be working with these two but with special focus on the first one!

Step #2: What Really Is The Demand?

Next I will proceed to know if the demand is high enough. Is this niche a popular one? Are people looking to buy products in it?

So working with “how do you stop snoring” I opened Google’s keyword tool and entered this keyword phrase. Please note that I selected “Exact” as the match type. Here is a graphic of what I received:

There are actually two things that are my focus here these are “Competition” and “Global Monthly Searches!”

The competition is an indication of how other “sellers” sees this market. You’ll notice that for our example the indication is “high.” It is clear from all the keyword phrases returned in this experiment!

NOTE: A word about this competition. I have heard many say if this is high you should stay away from it because it means you will be up against a big competition. Unfortunately, it is not so!  This is only true if you’re using Google Adwords for your promotion. If however, your niche site will be monetized through Google Adsense and other affiliate products, going for this is your best bet!

For me, I don’t use Google Adwords. Search engine optimization is my specialty and writing SEO optimized web content is my stock in trade! And so, I actually look out for a high “Competition” as it is an indication profitability!

Step #3: How Profitable Is Really This Niche!

Now this step is only to confirm if truly this niche is profitable. For this I will use another online keyword tool and Amazon.com. The keyword tool is Spyful.com.

First, I will start with Spyful.com and I will be looking to find for our potential niche a search result of at least 1500 searches a day for all keywords combined. Also, I’ll check to know how much advertisers are paying per clicks (PPC) for these keywords on Google Adwords.

As a general rule, if the cost/click hits anywhere between 50 cents and $3.00, it’s a good indicator that people are making money in this niche market. A pointer that you too can make some money in it!

So, let’s see what Spyful.com has for our keyword phrase:

Please take note of the data I’ve highlighted. These are worth explaining.

1.    Monthly Searches – This shows the local and Global figures from world-wide traffic as indicated by Google searches in all countries. For our example the local search is 240 while global it is 480! Of course, these looks insignificant but remember, I’m looking for a search result of at least 1500 searches a day for all keywords combined! For this, simply scroll down the page and you will see another section for “Profitable Related Keywords.”

You should add these together and then divide by 30 to get the daily results.

2.    Cost Per Click – This is an estimate of the clicks an advertiser should expect from his advert on average each day and the the advertiser will pay per each click. Of course, this is only an estimate but for you as a niche site builder, it is an indication of what you can earn from such ads!

3.    Click-Through Rate – This is Google’s estimation of the number of clicks an ad gets vs. the total impressions the ad receives. If an ad appears 100 times, and it gets 2 clicks, its CTR is 2%! This is another profitability indicator for you. Please take note of this.

4.    Ranking Difficulty – Ranking difficulty takes into account the strength of the domains, on-page signals like “keyword in title,” and the number of .gov and .edu domains. We will talk more about this later when we discuss keyword research.  For now we will let it be!

So, there you have the data laid out for you. Easy to assimilate and simple to understand! All you need to do is use your experience and decide if this niche is worth targeting.

From my experience this is indeed a profitable niche however, from the “Monthly Searches” and “Ranking Difficulty” it will take some extra work to make an impact in the search engines.

But then you may want to check out Amazon.com before making your final decision.

So, what do you do?

Simply go to Amazon.com and enter the phrase, “how do you stop snoring” without the quotes.

Take Away: This is indeed a simple way of finding good and profitable niche markets.  How long does this take. For me, 30minutes to 1 hour is enough. But if you have not mastered the process it may take you a little longer.  You may decide to go for paid research tools. That is fine!

When I started the Niche Site Duel 2.0 I decided to look into some of these paid tools. And so, because Pat Flynn recommended the Long Tail Pro keyword tool I went on to download the trial version and tried it out. I also downloaded the trial version of Market Samurai having heard of it for some time now.

Now, I must say there are all good for keyword research.  But from my experience, to really get the best from them, you need the information I’ve just given you in this post. I must confess, I simply love using the free tools I used in this post. Yes, they may take time but I have a better grip on what I’m doing!

SEO Keyword Research Guide to Getting On Google’s First Page!

[UPDATE: This post is part of a series on WordPress SEO written before the many updates by Google in the recent past. Though the info in this post are still very relevant, most of the tools and tactics referenced in this post have changed. You’re therefore advised to use with caution.]

In our last article we emphasized the importance of strategically placing the right keyword phrases in your content to effectively optimize your  wordpress blog. Having touched the WHY of implementing seo keywords in your content we want to shift our focus to the HOW in this our search engine optimization training updates.

What to Concentrate On In SEO Keyword Research

Ever heard of long tail, short tail and the other fancy words SEOs use when talking about keyword research? Do you know all of these have different impact when you are working on improving search engine ranking?

Some SEO experts classify SEO keywords into head and tail while others classify them into head, body and tail keywords. Not minding the classification here is simply what they are all about.

1. Head keywords are usually of one or two words. For example marketing, professional blogging, Amazon, etc. These type of seo keywords are most times brand names or general words. Though these keywords produce a greater percentage of searches every day the traffic generated from head keywords is usually not targeted.

2. Body keywords, which most seo’s put with head keywords are mostly a combination of two or three words. For example blog marketing tips; make money blogging, seo expert tips, internet marketing, home business etc. These types of seo keyword phrases get lesser searches than head keywords however; they are more targeted than the head keywords.

3. Tail keywords are most times referred to by many as long tail keywords. But the important thing to note is that these are keyword phrases of three or more words. These are searched far less than the head and body keywords. But from a search engine optimization point, they are far better in producing targeted traffic than the first two. For example, search engine optimization expert Houston, work at home business tips for single mothers, facebook marketing strategist dc, etc.

What you should note however, is that when you’re doing keyword research you should concentrate on “body” and “tail” keyword phrases and less on “head” keywords.

SEO Keywords Research: The Tools of the Game!

There are a plethora of tools you can use for keyword research. However, for this search engine optimization training, I want to concentrate on just a few free resources which I personally use.

Frankly, I don’t think you need most of the highly priced keyword research tools out there if all you want is putting your wordpress blog in the first page of the search engines. If you understand the strategy laid out in this tutorial, you can actually work on this whenever you’re creating your content.

However, if you intend to go deeper into search engine optimization as a professional offering SEO optimization services online then purchasing one of these keyword tools is a must. Also, if you want to speed up your keyword research and achieve quicker results then investing in a keyword tool is something you need to consider.

If any of the above applies to you here is a keyword tool you want to look into:

Having said that here are the keyword research tools I use:

1. Google Adwords Keyword Tool

This free keyword tool provided by Google has become one of the most accessed keyword tools out there. It returns results directly from Google’s own internal database of what people are searching for. Although no keyword tool is 100% accurate, Google’s own data is likely to be the most accurate. This tool gives you around 100 keywords. You can then dig deeper by taking some of the keywords it returns as seed keywords to find more body and tail keywords.

2. Wordtracker – free version

This is similar to the google adword tool. While the google keyword tool returns a monthly search result this one gives you an estimated daily search results for each keyword. Though this tool gives you the opportunity to estimate the type of traffic you can potentially generate with a particular keyword phrase, I rarely use it except when researching for niche sites. 3. SpyFu.com

This one gives you some good intelligence for spying on your competitors. It helps you have an insider look at what advertisers are paying per clicks (PPC) for your target keywords on Google Adwords. As a general rule, if the cost/click hits anywhere between 50 cents and $3.00, it’s a good indicator that you potentially have a profitable keyword. Here is the link:


4. Google Trends & Hot Trends

This is another tool from google that, if used well, can help you generate keywords that will generate a quick burst of traffic to your blog. This is very good if you’re running a news blog or a current affairs blog. Google Trends and Google Hot Trends basically show you which terms around the world are popular right now. There is a lot of useful information you can pick up with google trends and hot trends. There’s news volume, search volume, and several notable news articles displayed for you, along with where they occurred on the timeline. You can also see which countries, cities, and languages made the most searches. With Google Trends the work is already done for you. You just need to put it to good use. Get the tool here:


SEO Keyword Research: A Step By Step Guide

Now let’s move on to a simple guide for keyword research. For this I personally use the Google’s Adword Keyword Tool and the Google Search Tool – two free tools from google! Here we go:

Step 1: Preliminary Keyword Research: Brainstorm

Ok, the first keyword tool you actually need for this is your brain! Oh, but that the truth! Remember, you’re writing for humans and people do not go scampering for some software before they look up what they want on Google! Right? So most times you need your brain to come up with the seed keywords for your keyword research.

This is quite easy if you know your target niche very well. You simply need to “think up” a few keywords/phrases people may enter into the search engines while looking for information about your niche.  For example, if you’re targeting the “credit card” market you may think of keywords like, “the best credit cards online”, “best credit card 2011”, “online credit card approval” etc. Write down a few of these and then proceed to step 2.

Step 2: Research the Demand

I usually do my keyword research having in mind the principles of demand and supply. I consider the demand as the number of people searching for information using a particular keyword/phrase while the supply is the number of webpages already targeting that keyword/phrase. To know the demand for a particular niche and the keywords to target, I simply take the keyword phrases I’ve brainstormed above and enter them into the Google Adword Tool. For example, using our topic in this article – search engine optimization, I entered, “how can i optimize my blog for the search engines” in the search box as shown below:

Ok, there was nothing for the phrase I entered but I’ve about 100 keyword phrases there to work with! Click on the “Download” icon and download this result.

Now, before going to the next step I do a little dressing up” of the list. If you’re monetizing your content with Google Adsense this “dressing up” is something you’ll want to do.

Here’s what you need to do:

Open the list of keyword phrases as an excel sheet. Then rearrange them in descending order according to “Competitors”. This will return the keyword phrases with the highest number of “Competitors” on top. To do this in excel you simply need to use the filter function.

Note: These competitors are Adwords advertisers targeting each keyword phrase. The idea is that the higher the competition the high they must be paying per click. If that is so then this can possibly translate to more high-paying adsense ads showing up on your content! Cool, right? ?

After doing this with the list I downloaded, this is how it looked:

The keyword phrases I highlighted are ones I considered as possible ones to use based on what I’m doing with this blog seo tutorial. However, before anything else I’ll need to analyze the competition.

Step 3: Analyse the Competition

In this step we want to analyze the keywords phrases bearing in mind these two questions:

Will this keyword phrase bring me enough traffic?

• Can I rank high with this keyword phrase?

To answer these questions I use the following formula to choose which keyword phrases to focus on:

At least 1,500 monthly searches

• Not more than 30,000 pages in Google “in quotes”

• Not more than 10,000 results for “allintitle”

The first criteria answer the question of traffic while the other two answer the question of ranking. Not doing this can result in a waste of time and resources because you might end up targeting a keyword phrase that is too competitive or don’t get enough searches.

The list of keywords you got from the Google adwords keyword tool already give you the approximate number of searches each phrase receives each month. And so using the criteria above simply trim the list removing any keyword phrase that is below 1500 searches each month and then go on to analyze for ranking.

For ranking you need to do two things, first, you need to find out how many people are using each keyword phrase on their pages. You do this by entering the keyword into Google in quotes. This will tell you how many other pages contain that exact phrase. The next step is to see how strong those other competitors are.

As we have seen in our previous articles Google and the other search engines usually give a tremendous amount of weight to the words appearing in the title of each page. You therefore need to see how many of those pages are also using the phrase in their title. You can easily know this by entering the following search command into Google:

allintitle:”keyword in quotes”

So let’s do this for our keyword phrases from step 2 above.

Before doing that I’ll open up the list of keywords and beside the “Competition” column I’ll create two more columns and name them “Competing Pages” and “Allintitle” like this:

I’ll now go to http://www.google.com and taking each keyword phrase in the keyword list, I’ll enter them into the google search box with quotes.

For example, for the phrase “search engine optimization course” google returned 174,000 competing webpages:

Take note of this number and write it down in the “Competing Pages” column against the keyword. Do this for all the keyword phrases.

Next take each keyword phrase and again enter them into the search box but this time enter: allintitle:”keyword phrase in quotes”  like this:

For “allintitle” you can see that this returned 9,070. Do the same for all the keyword phrases and enter them in the column named “AllinTitle.”

Using the criteria above I’ve highlighted some of the possible keyword phrases I could easily optimize for in this wordpress seo tutorial!

All you need is to go through the list and note the keywords you can use in your content for search engine optimization purposes. Remove the seo keyword phrases that fall out of the bracket and then save your new list. These keyword phrases will now form the frame work for your content creation in the days ahead.

Ok, that is for now but before I sign off it’s important to point out again that researching and using the right seo keywords in your content is very crucial to your blog’s ranking. This article was initially intended to cover wordpress seo keyword research. Unfortunately, like a broken record, I’ve continued to read blogs where the blogger tries to downplay the importance of using keywords/phrases in your content for seo purposes.

Since my intention in this tutorial is to make clear the what, the why and the how of WordPress blog seo, I did decided to write this article to show why you must not overlook the importance of keywords if you want some organic seo rankings.

SEO, Keywords and Creating Content for Your Human Readers!

Ever heard the phrase: “Content Is King?” You definitely have!

What about bloggers who, based on that phrase, argues a blogger does not need to concern him/herself with researching and optimizing blog content for keywords?  You know, they want you to simply concentrate on creating good content and allow the search engines decide where to rank your content.

Read things like that, right?

Indeed, it’s clear that those who consider keyword research as a waste of time have in mind the years when black-hat internet marketers gamed the search engines through keyword stuffing.

But frankly that is not what SEO keyword use is about. It’s clear that the search engines have evolved over the years and trying to game them with keyword stuffing would only produce negative effects.

In fact, with the recent Google Panda update, Google now considers human activity on your site as a crucial element for ranking any site. And what will produce this human activity?  The quality of your content!

But does that mean implementing keywords for search engine optimization purpose in your content is a waste of time?

I’m sure you’ve used the search engines to search for information before. What did you do when you searched for that information? Did you simply entered what came to your mind into the search box? Did you not first considered the information you wanted and then entered a phrase which you thought would best describe what you wanted?

Now what you entered is nothing but keywords or better still keyword phrases. This is what all of us do when we use the search engines. When we search for information on the search engines we do so with keyword phrases.  Your content must therefore be able to convince the search engines that it matches the words that people are actually searching for.

This is what effective blog SEO is all about! You should be able to tell the search engines in your content what it’s supposed to rank for! Without that every other thing you would have done to optimize your content would be lost.

This position was made clear in my previous article on how to strategically use WordPress plugins to enhance your blog’s SEO:

“Your blog’s title, description meta tag, content, keyword density and links form the essential SEO elements which the search engine spiders focus on when they crawl your blog. It is the information they gather from these elements that they use when they index your blog.

“Whenever someone request information through a search, the search engines check the keyword phrases used against the information indexed and returns the pages that best suit those keyword phrases. Because of this it’s important that you focus on these elements whatever the niche you’re targeting.”

Blog SEO, Keyword Phrases in Content – An Experiment!

To put what I have said so far to the test and to show that using keyword phrases in your content is very important, I did a little experiment while putting this article together.

I Googled the phrase: “wordpress seo strategy” (without the quotes) and here is what Google returned:

Of the 3,760,000 pages Google believes are optimized for that phrase my article on laying the right foundation for your blog’s seo strategy rank #5! And remember this article was written just a few days ago as Part 1 of this wordpress seo series!

Now do you think Google is wrong about this result? Did Google simply and randomly picked the pages shown in that graphic?

Alright, let’s take a look at what Yahoo! and MSN says,

For Yahoo!:

And, for MSN:


Ok, Yahoo! returned 296,000 and MSN 513,000 pages against Google’s 3,760,000. But in each of these results, my wordpress seo article rank #5 for Google, #5 for Yahoo! and #4 for MSN!

Surprised? You shouldn’t be! Of course I’ll be talking about the simple strategy used in subsequent articles when we’ll be talking about keyword research and content creation. But for now to let you know the importance of using your keywords right, I want you to take another look at those results.

Can you notice that one common thing with all of the pages returned is that the phrase “wordpress seo strategy” appeared bold in all?

That is the search engines’ way of assuring you that the information you searched for is what they have given to you! Seeing those keyword phrases is an assurance  that you are not getting SERPs that talk about what you’re looking for.

Still not convinced that keywords and implementing the right keyword phrases in your content is very important? Still want to believe some “guru” blogger with a list of 10,000+ subscribers who says you don’t need keyword research to drive traffic to your blog?

Ok, that is understandable. He’s a “guru” while I’m not! 🙂

But don’t be deceived. If you don’t have that type of list that brings traffic to your blog, you’d better make the search engines your best friends. And how you can do that is by giving them what they want and they would love you for it!

Keyword Research Empowers You To Create Just The Right Content!

Before I round off this article, let me quickly say that what we have said in this article is the basis of seo keyword research.  Doing a seo keyword research gives you the power to peep into the mind of your prospects so that you can know ahead of time what they really want. With this knowledge you’ll be able to create the type of content that they want to read.

It’s like creating a product. You don’t want to first, create a product and then go looking for those who want that product.

On the contrary, the wise thing is first, run a market research with the mind of knowing what the market wants. With this knowledge you can then create a product your target market would be eager to pay for!

So keyword research gives you the scientific knowledge that removes guess work from your content creation. With this knowledge you can strategically write your content with the keyword phrases “sprinkled” in to help the search engines determine where to place it in the SERPs.
