13 Weird Secrets of Successful Bloggers Revealed!

How successful bloggers make a living blogging

Have you ever wondered how a “select” group of bloggers are making a living, or very nearly making a living from their personal blogs?

Yes, you hear (or read) of them jetting off to interesting places, wearing beautiful clothes, and reviewing all manner of products…and making a living from it. But, have you considered how they do it?

Now, if this has been a sort of mystery to you then wonder no more because you too can. In this post I’m about revealing to you the carefully guided secrets of these successful bloggers!

For the past five years I’ve been monitoring a select few of these bloggers and now I can confidently say, I’ve uncovered their secrets! The surprising thing is that most of these bloggers are really not “working” as hard as the rest us however, the results are totally weird!

So, if you have been thinking that this is beyond you, then you will need to think again!

Secrets of Successful Bloggers Revealed!

Secret #1: Blog About Stuff You’re Interested In

The first step is to think of things that you’re interested in to blog about. If you blog about things just because you think people will like them, even if you don’t like them, it’ll shine through in the way you write. You’ll lose interest pretty quickly. Only blog about things you’re interested in and care about as a rule.

Secret #2: Blog For the Right Reasons

You should blog for all the right reasons. Blog for you. Don’t blog for somebody else, because somebody you know is doing it, or because you think it will make you rich. It might very well make you rich, but that will come after years of perseverance and work. You’ll make next to nothing in the first few years, and you’ll quickly give up if you’re doing it for money reasons.

Secret #3: Be Consistent

Consistency is the key to a successful blog. Posting sporadically won’t get you many loyal readers. That isn’t to say you should post at exactly the same time on the same days, although that would be way more organized and effective. Simply commit to posting a couple of times a week to stay fresh and current. If you leave it for too long without publishing a post, you can bet that you’ll lose interest.

Secret #4: Write Original Content

The worst thing you can do is copy other bloggers. Your content should be completely original. So original that it passes all of the searches Copyscape can muster. You can get in trouble for this and you won’t develop a great readership. Make sure your content is all your own, written off the top of your head. Feel free to take inspiration and do research, but make sure that it stops there. Nobody likes a ‘me too’ blog either, so even if you aren’t copying anybody still try to make your blog stand out.

Secret #5: Make Friends With Other Bloggers

Whatever you do, don’t keep yourself to yourself. Even if you’re normally an introverted creature, try to come out of your shell and make friends with other bloggers. Comment on their posts, follow them, share valuable information, whatever it takes. Most successful bloggers are really supportive of one another, so make sure you’re always friendly.

Secret #6: Connect With Blogger Networks

Blogger networks exist to help connect bloggers and brands. Working with brands has many advantages, if you weren’t aware already. Some of them will give you something free for a blog post in exchange. Others will pay you for advertising. Blogger networks makes it easy for you to find each other, so make sure you sign up to them and make your profile look appealing.

Secret #7: Comment On Other Blogs

Commenting on other blogs is essential. Not only will it send people back to your own blog, it allows you to connect with bloggers and blog readerships. Just make sure that the comments you leave are valuable. They should be well thought out and relevant to the content. Answer a question posed or add something useful to the discussion. Comments like ‘good job’, or ‘nice!’ won’t get you very far.

Secret #8: Guest Post

When you’ve made enough blogger friends, you may have the opportunity to write guest posts and have guest posts written for you. This is a great way to attract a bigger following, so don’t hesitate to approach a blogger you like with a collaboration proposal. Don’t get ahead of yourself though; you need to establish yourself in this industry first.

Secret #9: Post at Peak Times

Peak times include early in the morning when people are travelling to work, in the afternoon when people are having lunch, and in the evening when people are relaxing. Releasing your blog posts at these times will be much more effective than doing it when you feel like it.

Secret #10: Take a Notebook Everywhere

Most successful bloggers take a small notebook everywhere with them. This way, they can note down ideas for posts and never forget another valuable opportunity! Even if an idea doesn’t seem tangible to you at the time, write it down. It may come in handy one day. If you haven’t made a blog yet and find yourself thinking about it, start with this to see if you regularly come up with good post ideas. I bet you’d create a free website today if you realised just how great your ideas were!

Secret #11: Include Pretty Pictures

Pictures are proven to increase the click through rate of a blog post by a mile. Try to include pictures that are all your own. They should be as high quality and attractive as you can make them. There are lots of tutorials online, so make sure you watch them to get an idea of how to make great blog photos. Some bloggers make their posts photo heavy, while others go easy on the photos and heavy on the text. Either way, you need something to break up your information!

Secret #12: Be Yourself

Don’t try to be somebody or something you’re not. The most successful bloggers are nothing but themselves. Ignore what you think is popular and what people will like. There will always be somebody out there who wants to read about you.

Secret #13: Don’t Compare Yourself to Others

Never compare yourself to others. This can be hard, with so many other bloggers around. However, this can stop you from being yourself and posting the things you want to post. Don’t focus on how many followers somebody else has got, or how many awards. Focus on yourself and how you can improve. Show support to other bloggers and you’ll get it back.

There you have the uncanny secrets of that successful bloggers have been using to make a living online. Use these secrets wisely and you will be able to create a successful blogging career without fail. Good luck!

Inspiration: Your Business Success Is Your Responsibility!

Day 6 of Our 12 Days of Christmas InspirationI started these 12 Days of Christmas Inspiration series by relating the incident that brought down the Web Income Journal for about 5 days. That was the second of its kind in a matter of months. And of course, it was just one of the numerous other challenges I have faced building my online business.

But like I said in the post, rather than let that incident and the frustration and pain it caused me to crush my spirit, it motivated me the more to ensure that no matter what happens, this business must succeed and therefore I must put in more effort!

Now, that resolve was because I have learned to be responsible!

It’s because I’ve learned that:

  • The success or failure of your online business is up to you. You have no one to blame.
  • The freedom and choice to make your business produce results are your responsibility.
  • Success or failure the credit goes to no one but you.
  • Your blog readers will not do it for you neither will your online friends!

Of course, I have earlier mentioned the need to collaborate with others in order to achieve your dream, but that does not remove the responsibility from you. Your blog readers and online friends are there to assist but be ready to carry the load of responsibility alone!

Being responsible demands being bold enough to step out on your own through individual initiative. You must be able to act independently and with greater self-reliance.

It demands taking the right actions that will bring you to your desired goal. The responsible are always ready to roll up their sleeves and put action to their desires!  Forget “all-done-it-for-you” and those “set-and-forget-it” tactics being touted by unscrupulous vendors.

3 Things You Must Do To Be Responsible

1. Invest In Your Self

Successful people agree that success is not really what you get but what happens to you. It is about who you become and not what you beget. It is a reflection of your person. If you are successful inside it will show in the outside. As it is commonly said, “Your attitude will determine your altitude!”

It is important therefore that the first action you must take towards being responsible is to invest in building your capacity. Read the right books and apply what you read to your business. To be fruitful you need to stay green and continuous study will help you stay green and therefore fruitful!

2. Design Your Own Action Plan

You are unique. Your circumstances and experiences are distinct from others. You don’t need every strategy out there to succeed with your business. Get as much as is necessary and then structure your own action plan. Make it unique to you. Add what you know will help you. Try new approaches only if you know they will further you purpose. Depending on your business model, your action plan may not be what others are using but the important thing is if it is working for you then it is useful.

3. Be Proactive And Not Reactive

Change is rapid on the net. A tactic that worked a few minutes ago will become obsolete in the next few hours! That “sure-fire” tactic you have just read about is actually outdated already! It has been milked inside out. Why run around looking for the latest tricks and tactics? It will only weary you. Instead, learn to read and interpret what is happening. Learn to understand where the trend is going and then make the move to position yourself before others. This may sound a bit out of your reach but the truth is you don’t have to compete with the big players. Learn from them and carve out your own stand!

Here is one way to do this. As the year is running to a close many companies and businesses that are into research are coming out with reports and predictions for the coming year. Study these reports. Note what they are saying about your target market. Use your knowledge to review your business and tactics.

Take away

Your business is your responsibility. The buck stops on your table. You have a duty to yourself and your family to ensure that it works. You cannot blame anyone whatever happens. You are given an equal opportunity as everyone else – twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week and fifty-two weeks a year. Invest them rightly and your dream will become a reality.

So, what is your take? Will love to read and respond to your comments below.

May 21 2011, Judgment Day? For us it’s Recovering Day!

If only you can hear me right now. I’ve just heaved a big sigh of relief! 🙂

You may have noticed that for some days I’ve been silent on this blog. I’ve not been able to approve nor reply any comment. My last post here was on May 17th titled: “Want To Maximize Your Blogging Success? Employ These Problogger Social Skills!”  When I did that post I never had any problem either to login or do anything.

But, I was greatly surprised when I tried to login on wednesday and I discovered that my admin area will not load. I tried all I could be all to no avail. In fact, since that day I’ve been trying whatever method I know but nothing worked!

I was really scared that I lost everything and will need to start all over again since I’ve not taken any backup for a long time. I’ve been trying to use phpMyAdmin to do a backup since I have used this before but nothing worked. And so when I finally decided that whatever happens I must find a way to correct the problem today I did what I think best to do, and that is, to uninstall and re-install a new blog. Of course I had to use my webhost backup facility to backup the database since the backup I took with phpMyAdmin did not work.

I must say I so happy that after re-installing everything is back as if nothing happened!

Wow, it was a week of anxiety and tension for me 🙂 but I’m glad that this day May 21 2011 is indeed a recovering day for us! And to our dear friends and readers, we must apologise that we have left you in the dark all these days.

Water Crucial To The Success Of The Millenium Development Goals!

[This is post is in respect of this year’s Bloggers Action Day when bloggers in collaboration with Change.org are drawing attention to the importance of water in the sustenance of our world. You’re encouraged to support this by tweeting the post, sharing it with your friends on facebook or other social networks and of course taking action on the issues raised on the post. Thank you as you do so!]

The situation of water in Africa simply re-echoes the cry of the sailor who said, “Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink!” Africa indeed is blessed with the abundance of water with many rivers and streams criss-crossing the landscape of the continent. Unfortunately, millions of Africans are without safe drinking water.

The situation is not in any way different in other parts of the world. As the General Assembly of the United Nations Organisation said, about 900 million people worldwide do not have access to clean, safe and drinkable water.

But why this sorry state when our earth is agreed to be unique in the universe for its abundance of water? Is 70% of our earths surface not made up of water? Why then should a greater percentage of the people of the earth go without safe drinking water?

Today we have the opportunity of not just asking questions but committing ourselves to doing something about this situation. Today the 15th of October 2010, Change.org in collaboration with Blog Action Day have decided to use this year’s occasion to draw attention to this most important issue.

How You Can Be A Part Of This

In July, the United Nations declared Safe, clean drinking water and sanitation as a human right essential to the full enjoyment of life and all other human rights. As I’ve said before it’s time to go beyond words, you too can join this onerous task by supporting the UN’s work to supply clean, safe drinking water to the world’s poorest populations and urge UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to continue the UN’s life-saving work in bringing water and sanitation to developing nations by signing this petition.

Besides, you can also give hope to millions worldwide by giving just $25. About 4,500 children are reported to die each day becuase of lack of safe water and basic sanitation facilities. In all of these the poor are especially hard hit and this is the pathetic situation of the African continent known for its poverty and disease.

Despite African leaders declaration to achieving universal access to clean water, through their development blueprint, the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), and through their support for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), it is partinent that they need the support of well meaning individuals like you. Change.org gives you that opportunity to help the suffering masses of Africa with a donation of $25. Click here to give your donation.

As an individual I know the pains of lacking access to safe clean drinking water. Not quite a few months ago, there was an outbreak of cholera and gastroenteritis in northern Nigeria, my dear country. The cholera outbreak claimed many lives mostly nursing mothers, pregnant women and infants. Allfrica.com writing on the poor sanitary condition of the areas affected by the cholera outbreak said,

“It is common to see wells from which water for drinking and cooking is fetched being located very close to pit toilets and that contaminated water from these wells easily sip into the wells of other households”

This is really pathetic but the situation is not different in other parts of the continent. During the World Water Day celebration in Kenya this year, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) released a reported titled, “Clearing the Waters: A Focus on Water Quality Solutions” where it said, “Investment in safe water will have high returns in ensuring a healthy ecosystem and human society.”

The report went further to state these facts:

  • Globally, 2 million tons of sewage and industrial and agricultural waste are poured into the world’s waters every day;
  • At least 1.8 million children under five years-old die every year from water-related diseases, or one every 20 seconds;
  • Every day, millions of tons of inadequately treated sewage and industrial agricultural wastes are poured into the world’s waters;
  • More people die as a result of polluted water than are killed by all forms of violence, including wars;
  • Over half of the world’s hospital beds are occupied with people suffering from illnesses linked with contaminated water.

Get details of this report here.

I’m sure you can see what we are against. This is why I laud the decision of devoting this year’s Blog Action Day to tackling this problem. I do hope you’ll gladly offer your support by giving a donation or signing the petition.

Let’s make our world a better place!
