When I started this blog back in 2009 the subject of making money blogging was just at its infancy. A lot of people back then were jumping in and starting their own blogs.

Many of these bloggers became overnight gurus dishing out how to make money blogging tips. Every where you turn there was a blog on how to make money blogging. A lot of times the same tips were just being tweaked and re-posted on different blogs.

On the surface it does appear that most of these bloggers were really making a ton of money from their efforts. However, over the years I have observed a lot of these “guru bloggers” drop by the wayside!

I can attest to this fact because every time I do a general review of this blog I’ve always seen a huge number of broken links. Most of these broken links are mostly from blogs that I have linked to over the years.

But why would someone who have always shown that they are making money from their blogs and have taken it upon themselves to teach others how to make money blogging suddenly abandon their blog?

The answer to that question is not far fetched. The truth is most of those guru bloggers were only putting up a front. While they may appear to be successful on the surface the truth is most of them were making next to nothing from their blogs.

For example, while a recent report indicated that about 67.5% of bloggers blog to make money online only about 5% of bloggers are actually making a full income from their blogs!

This is why a lot of bloggers after struggling for years trying to scrap a living from their blog end up throwing in the trowel. Of course, it’s  frustrating to put in so much and yet get nothing out.

In this post I want to share with you the top five mistakes that I have found, over these years, to be main reason why many bloggers fail. Matter of fact is, if you’re presently struggling with your blog, one of these mistakes might just be the culprit!

Mistake #1: Blogging without a Definite Purpose

What is your motivation for starting the blog?

Do you have a story to tell?

It’s unfortunate that many of the blogs out there are nothing but “just another blog!” From design to content; and tactics, there’s really nothing that separates them from other blogs.

In fact, many of these blogs were started because the blogger was impressed by the results being posted by other probloggers out there.

The truth is, if you want to make money with your blog it is important that you have a definite purpose for the blog. You must be able to answer the question, WHY this blog? Not taking care of this before you start will put a whole lot of boulders on your way. 

So, if you are in this boat right now it’s important that you take some time off and settle this issue. Ask yourself questions like: 

  • Why am I really blogging?
  • I’m I here just to share my thoughts and opinions or to make a living?
  • If I’m here to make money how do I do that?
  • Should I be promoting affiliate products or selling my own product/service?
  • And what do I need to do to accomplish this?

Doing this right now will help you get a clearer picture and the focus of your blog.

As the common saying goes, when you fail to plan you’re planning to fail. Unfortunately, not many bloggers who want to make money blogging really care to take this to heart.

Mistake #3: Not Building a List

This is really a big one.

Despite hearing it over and over again that the money is in the lists, many bloggers have not seen the need to start an email list. They are content with just writing content, interacting with other bloggers in the comment section of their blogs and connecting on social media sites.

As much as these things are good, you must know that an email list is your greatest asset when it comes to marketing online. Let no one deceive you with talk about email being a dead online marketing tactic. Indeed, many internet marketers may have put a bad name on this because of their spammy email promotions but don’t let that put you off.

Offering email subscription on your blog is the easiest way of turning your blog into a money making machine. Remember, not everyone who visits your blog will return except you have a system to bring them back. Capturing their contact info and adding them to your email contact list is the best way to do that.

You may have an RSS feed subscription on your blog but that has many limitations which an email list will help you overcome.

Of course, it is important that you choose your blog topic based on what you know and you’re interested in as this will help you greatly in writing content and showing your expertise. However, except your desire is to share your thoughts with your family and friends, it is important that you research the profitability of your target niche before you jump in.

That being said, it will be an uphill task if you choose a blogging niche simply because of the money. Focusing only on the money will ultimately lead to frustration.

So, what to do?

Choose your blog niche based on market profitability and your passion.

The good news is, if you know little to nothing about a niche you can spend a few weeks to research the topic online. Doing this will set you on the path of becoming an expert in that field in no distant time.

There are thousands of online tools available that you can use. If you’re already blogging and you discover you are having problems with this, take some time off, do the necessary research and then reposition your blog.

Mistake #5: Not Driving the Right Traffic

I must say that this is one problem that many bloggers are having without really knowing it. Over these years I’ve come across very wonderful and passionate bloggers. From all indications they appear to be doing great with their blogs. Superb blog posts, impressive blog comment sections, social buttons displaying the envious number of shares, etc.

But, when you ask how much they are making from their blogs the responses are a nothing to write about!

Many of these bloggers cover up with things like: blogging is not about making money but connecting with like minds! But I don’t really think these bloggers love working their butts off just because they want to be known as a blogger. Or, do you?

But, what is really the problem here?

It is this: these bloggers are simply driving the wrong type of traffic to their blogs!

Like we have seen above your blog exist for a specific purpose. In the same way, your blog should be targeted at a specific group. If you have clearly defined the purpose of your blog from the beginning knowing your blogs target audience will not be a problem.  And this will determine your promotional tactics.

When you have these sorted out you wouldn’t waste your time running round other blogs, commenting and interacting with other bloggers, except they are your targeted audience.

To drive the right type of traffic to your blog, go where your target audience is and then entice them to your blog. This way monetizing your blog traffic will become easy.

How to Write a Good Blog Title: SEO Title Tips!

Putting together a blog post is like constructing a building. There are different parts to the blog that will make it achieve your purpose. But of all these the title is the most important.

Crafting a powerful title for your blog post is a skill you must master as a blogger. Your post titles are simply headlines that could make or break your posts!

In this post I want to reveal a simple tactic that you can use to greatly empower your post titles. I’m sure you’ve heard about the why and how to optimize your titles for the search engines. All that is good stuff. But the tactic I want to reveal here is something that will take your post titles to another level when it come to search engine optimization.

This simple tactic could really be laid out in 3 components. But I’ll simply handle it by breaking it up as follows:

Remember your regular readers will not go to google before they come to your blog. They are not searching for your site. Either they will come via RSS feed or they might simply enter your blog URL into their blowser.

Once you’ve this installed, before publishing your blog post, take the same title you’ve written and rework it. Ensure that you build in a little curiosity and your target keywords/phrases into it. Enter the new title into the SEO box in your writing section. It’s something like this:

4. Craft A Powerful Description For The Post:

The last thing you’ll want to do before publishing your post is to enter a description for the post.

Understand that when it comes to search engine marketing what will help your blog article to achieve its purpose of drawing traffic to your blog is its ability to offer something of interest to the searcher.

Getting on the first page of Google is nothing. What really matters is that people click on your links and visit your blog. And most times what will achieve this is not just the title but the title in conjunction with the description.

It must interest you to know that if you don’t give the search engines a description, they will simply take the first few words on your post and return that as the description. Or most times they return your blog home description!

This does not only affect the search engine ranking of that post but also may not peek the interest of that particular searcher.

For me that’s truly profound. And I’d say, “The most important day in your life as a blogger is the day you find out why you are blogging and pursue it with all your passion!”

So, do you want to build a blogging business? First, find out your WHY!

Step 2: Define Your Target Audience

Who’s your ideal blog reader? Who do you want to target with your content and offers?

Defining your target audience right from the start will help you avoid wasting your precious time in activities that does not add any positive returns to your business. So, with your blog’s purpose in mind decide who your idea customer will be.

Truth is, no matter the amount of traffic you drive to your blog or the number of followers and friends you acquire on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, etc. if you have not defined your blog’s target audience all your efforts will amount to nothing.

Never delude yourself by the huge growth in your social media following. The truth is social media is great for driving traffic to your blog but those who will help you meet your purpose are those who are interested in your offers.

This is your target market. Ignore this and you will simply waste your time chasing the wrong crowd.

I can tell you this from my personal experience. Time past, this blog was averaging 50 comments per post. The irony was that this “highly engaged community” of fellow bloggers hardly clicked on any ad – not even Google Adsense on the blog – at least as a show of support!

Pick the wrong audience and you can be sure of frustration along the way. You really don’t want that.

Step 3: Define Your Product/Service

It was Robert Kiyosaki who said that except you’re the Central Bank or the government’s designated minting company, you don’t make money because…

Money is earned!

And, I’ve said this earlier, blogs don’t make money; businesses do!

Businesses make money by solving a problem for people or by filling a need. They do this by selling product(s) or service(s) that provide a specific outcome or transformation for their customers.

And so, to make money with your blog you need to have a system of earning that money. You need a product or service that your target audience is ready to exchange for their money.

Now, there’s something called product market fit. As defined by Marc Andeerssen, who coined the term in 2007, product market fit is “being in a good market with a product that can satisfy that market.”

Basically, what this means is that you need a market that’s large enough and a product that fulfills a need of that market.

From research, between 43% and 75% of businesses fail because they wrongly assume that people are interested in their product/service. And so, in defining your product/service you must avoid falling into this trap. You should research your target audience to pinpoint their pain areas and then offer products/services that will heal those pains.

If you’d rather go for free traffic sources then I’ll recommend search engine optimization (SEO). But you must understand that this is really not free as you’d be paying with your time – and time is money!

Conversely, I have also discovered that the worst traffic source for blogs is traffic from blog comments. Comment traffic has only one value for your blog: SOCIAL PROOF!

If you aim to sell advertising space on your blog, the comment section of your blog could be an advantage. But beyond this depending on traffic from comments is a very quick way to go into extinction!

So, you must ask yourself from the beginning if building your blog business will still be worth it if it takes years to get there!

6. Business model jumping and niche hopping

This is related to #5 above. A lot of newbie entrepreneurs, because of wrong expectations, are easily moved to abandon their business or change strategies because they see someone else making money in another niche or market.

Instead of focusing on what is working for others find your focus and then stick with it until you make it work. Jumping from one business to another and from niche to niche makes nonsense of your efforts. However, simple, repeatable, and consistent action steps towards your goal will eventually get you there.

Blogging has grown in popularity over the years. In the same vein it has evolved into its own online money making industry over this period of time.

But beyond these changes one thing that has continued to be a surprise to many is the variance in success level among bloggers in different genre.

As you read through it I want you to ask yourself a few questions:

1. Where do I stand in all of these as a blogger?

2. Where do I hope to be in the next year with my blog?

3. What one stat can I work on to move my blog to the next level?

Why I want you to ask yourself these questions is because of some of the insights from the survey.

For example:

  • Over 43.3% of bloggers surveyed listed “Hobby” as the reason for starting their blog(s)! Really? As someone who is always encouraging you to a business and not just a blog, that’s really not what I expected.
  • A surprisingly 69.6% are making $0 income from their blogs while about 0.6% are making over 1 million. Wow! Please read that again and see the disparity. But that just correlates well with the fact that a big number only take their blog as a “Hobby”!
  • A resounding 69.4% give lack of readers/traffic as their biggest worries compared to security (16.7%) and lack of earnings (54.9%).
  • Over 60% have started a blog only to abandon it while 40.7% have been consistent with their commitment to the blogs they started.

But before you start doing all of these, I want you to pay attention to me first, let me tell you a very important that will prevent you from taking the wrong steps thereby bringing your blog to its knee.

Yes, I know that no one is immune to making mistakes however; being aware can help prevent them from occurring.

1. Writing for Yourself Instead of Your Audience

Are you kidding me? I never knew you’re such a popular figure. You’re probably a celebrity if not; you must quit making your posts about yourself.

Here’s the truth: Your readers don’t give a sh*t about you unless if it will help them in one way or another.

As a content marketer, you must inform, inspire, educate, and guide your readers whenever necessary.

However, writing about your personal experiences once awhile is good because it will add some personality in your writing but it certainly must benefit your readers in a way.

2. You Want to Please Everyone

I totally understood your desire to touch as many lives as possible via your amazing content, but I’m sorry to inform you that such idea emanated from Hell.

You can’t possibly appeal to everyone, and a lot of bloggers don’t know this. The one critical thing that will ultimately determine the success or failure of your website is

how targeted your topics are.

Immediately you start writing for everyone; your content will become disengaging and annoying because your blog will lose its main scope.

However, you should instead, lesser-focus more on your core values. Channel your content solely on your select audience and forget about the others.

In the end, this will help to build up your expertise in your industry and will ensure you don’t fill your site with myriad topics.

3. You Don’t Know Your Target Audience

This is one of deadliest mistakes I see among bloggers, especially the new ones. You may understand your topic pretty well but if you don’t know who your audience is, it will display in everything you do on your site, and this will even

tually bring about your failure.

For you to build a solid blogging business, you will need to connect with your target audience on a deeper level. This will help you to serve them better and give th

em exactly what they need.

For example, how are you going to feel when you have a mentor who always tries to teach you how to count and write figures 123……..100 when you’re already very good at that?

I know how boring it can be to attend such class, and if care is not taken, you might eventually st

op attending his class.

The same thing happens when your mentor tries to teach you Calculus when you barely understand simple arithmetic.

Funny enough, this equally applies to blogging.

For you to make it, you need to fully understand your reader’s pain-points and then meet them right at the point of their needs – you have to know what level they are currently at on the topic you’re teaching them.

Without knowing all these things, your tips will either become too advanced or too basic for them, and this will end up scaring them away.

4. You’re using a Crappy Web Host

I can’t possibly stress much on the importance of choosing a reputable and reliable hosting company when starting your site.

It is often tempting to use any of the cheap and crappy ones out there, but unfortunately, that will eventually drive you out of business.

For instance, when I started my first site back in 2011, I made a mistake of choosing a cheap web host because I concluded that I couldn’t afford a quality web host.

Wondering what happened next?

Just as you guessed, I never knew the hosting company was insecure as a result; my blog got hacked up to 3 consecutive times until I finally left that domain name. This really frustrated the hell out of me, and if not for the fact that I’m highly committed to blogging, I would have called it a quit.

Here’s the truth…

…Getting a quality host can indeed be pricey, but in the end, it will be well worth it because it will save you from a lot of headaches.

Therefore, stay away from those low-quality web hosts as they will do you more harm than good.

5. You’re Not Consistent

One of the secrets of successful blogging is being super consistent. This is very important for the growth of any blog.
Yes, I’ve been advocating recently that you shouldn’t focus all your efforts posting daily as most gurus advised. This is because it may eventually start affecting the quality of your articles.

As far as content marketing is concerned, quality often trumps quantity. But, it is also advisable to have and maintain a publishing routine. Can you manage publishing once/week, twice, or even five times/week?

This is entirely up to you.

Once you’ve concluded on the right times and days you want to be publishing, you need to stick to it. What matters most, however, is for you always to ensure your content is of higher quality.

You need to understand that maintaining a publishing schedule is not about “Let’s just throw up some junk post because I’m committed to publishing 3 times per week”. This will ultimately affect your readership.

Writing 2 quality contents per week will obviously be well received by your audience than writing 7 low-quality, mediocre content per week. So, choose quality.

Consistency is the key


Blogging is indeed a tedious task, but not as hard as people made it. Once you understand the basics of blogging and avoid the mistakes mentioned in this post, you will never have any problem becoming the next pro blogger.

You need to:

1. Write for your audience, not for yourself

2. Stop pleasing everyone

Hey folks, it’s nice to write to you today from the corner of my girlfriend’s room. Yes, she’s just gone out and I thought I could quickly wrap my head around this and show you the world of better !

I must however, admit that there are a lot of articles flying everywhere online about this topic that you almost get really irritated at another sight of it.

Like you, I am tired but realizing that I still make some silly and common blogging mistakes, I decided to share my top 15 blogging tips which I hopefully believe will help the beginner blogger blog better. Hope you truly enjoy it as much as I am writing it!

1. Know Your Audience

The secret to stardom as a blogger is in knowing and understanding your target audience as to providing them the kind of content that they would love to read and share with their friends.

Knowing your audience well will help to get to their hearts with your content and as such help you make money online doing what you love.

2. Embrace Truth-Telling

Many people in the bid to make money online lie to their audience by providing them stolen and get-rich-quick-scheme content that don’t add value to the audience but only enlarge their pockets. You don’t become great online when your trust level is on downright low!

3. Pick A Topic

I have never seen anyone succeed in the online space, let alone in any endeavor by doing and talking about everything.

It’s good to practice what the mantra instructs – to know something about everything and everything about something – but it’s pretty important not to get lost trying to be everything to people.

You will only succeed in failing and burning yourself out. This is why you need to pick a topic to discuss with your audience and really stick to.

For me though, I majorly discuss blogging and make money online subjects.

There are a lot of people out there practicing mediocrity. You don’t want to join that bandwagon. You want to be a unique YOU.

You don’t want to add to the already noise out there but create awesome and quality-filled contents that will be helpful as well as useful to the people in which you are serving them to.

5. Be Wary Of Stat-Checking

Is good to check your metrics so that you know what you are doing right and the things that you are doing wrongly. But what is not cool is when you base all your energy and focus on checking your blog’s stats.

You are still a beginner I assume. So what you should be doing at this stage of your blogging life is creating content and religiously promoting your blog.

Now, please, don’t get me wrong. It’s good to check your stat, to see where your traffics are coming from and how best to target them next time, but it’s not just cool at this early stage of your blogging career.

6. Make Your Content Shareable

I visited a blog the other day and I was shocked to find that I could not help them (the blog editor) share the content on my social accounts – and you can almost trust that this blogger wrote a really fantastic article – but one that won’t get noticed, after all.

Beginner blogger, listen to me, make sure you install and use social sharing plugins, the likes of “Social Warfare” (I use this one on my blog), “DIGG”, and “Share This” plugin. They have a way of getting the words out about your contents.

The more people hit those buttons, the more traffic you get and the more you increase your chances of making money online.

7. Encourage Community

I learned this one from Jeff Goins. He said, “Write unfinished posts, and ask your community to complete the conversation.” This way, you are sure to increase the chances of your blog ever going viral in the blogging space.

8. Network Daily

The difference between the not-so-popular blogger and the really popular blogger is nothing but effective networking with other bloggers and the people that come together to make up his community. The importance of connecting with folks online and offline cannot really be overemphasized. That’s the truth!

9. Write For People

You must have heard the rants of how important guest posting are to building a blog to the point where it becomes extremely successful.

What having an email list does is that it connects you directly to the folks who are ready to listen to you, learn from you, buy from you and apply the lessons learned from you. It’s the best way of reaching your target audience. Take it from me.

To become extremely popular in the online space – to grow your blog to the place it becomes extremely successful – you’ve got to learn to give away a lot of free stuff.

You don’t have to be afraid; you can give out contents in forms such as PDF, video, audio and the likes.

Be sure to do these things religiously till you start to get hits/buzzes in your inbox to do deals with you.Mind you, these folks might evenend up becoming your loyal blog audience.

12. Be Consistent

“Common buddy, consistency is the key to growing a successful blog.” Those were the words of Adrienne Smith to me at a time when I was experiencing a lot of frustrations back in 2014. Actually, she was right.

And in the words of Neil Patel, “Consistency is one of the most important things that bloggers tend to forget. It’s much easier to lose your traffic than it is to build it up, so make sure you consistently blog.”

Let their advice guide you to stardom!

13. Keep It Short And Loaded

Have you ever read Seth Godin’s opinions, that is, blog posts? God, they are habitually short, straight-to-the-point and are loaded with take home points. This is what you should strive to doing as a beginner blogger that you are.

Derek Sivers shared this, “Biggest lesson I learned in my past year of blogging. Keep it in the 1–2 minutes read-time length.”

14. Publish Timeless Contents

If you’ve been on the web for most time, you’d notice that old contents are often perceived as outdated and irrelevant.

Not so?

Well, what you should do is not to write a post but a resource that will be cited in weeks, months, even years to come. That’s what I call ‘Epic Shit!’

15. Don’t Give Up

Maybe I need to stress that – Don’t ever think of GIVING UP! You win when you stick with what it is that you do, in this case, blogging.
