Did you noticed that gradually and steadily content marketing is becoming the in-thing for internet marketers? Oh, you’ve noticed? So, are you now creating content for SEO benefits or, are you still using those SEO tactics that draws the anger of Google?

With the many updates and ‘push’ against all forms of blackhat SEO, Google has clearly shown that the way forward for businesses to promote and market their wares online is using quality and informative content – content that is designed with your site users in mind.

In this article therefore, I want to give a few reasons why you should be using content marketing as a blogger.

But First, What Really is Content Marketing?

content for SEO

Content marketing is simply a marketing format that involves the creation and sharing of content in order to attract, acquire and engage clearly defined and understood current and potential consumer bases with the objective of driving profitable customer action. Content marketing subscribes to the notion that delivering information to prospects and customers drives profitable consumer action. Content marketing has benefits in terms of retaining reader attention and improving brands. (Wikipedia)

Content is king. You can say that again! That is why writing article is one of the most utilized Internet marketing strategy today. Internet surfers just can’t get enough of information on various fields. Providing information through these articles is a surefire way to drive hot traffic to your web site.

With the recent search engine updates, it’s obvious that SEO is no longer what it used to be. These days, you can’t just throw up a bad looking website, throw up common content, and build a few links and expect to rank well.

… You need to build a good and attractive website, write epic contents that solves peoples’ problems, build thousands of backlinks, and get thousands of social shares before you can see such result.

But problem is that it’s not easy to put all of this together. Building thousands of high quality links manually is really difficult and will take lots of your time and efforts. You may decide to outsource it which is also very expensive and even if you have the money, it will take months if not years to build those links. When it comes to social sharing, you won’t get them if you don’t have anything worth sharing unless you decide to purchase them from spammy accounts like fiverr.

The question now is…… how do you build thousands of links and get thousands of social shares naturally?

The answer?

….Content marketing!

Content marketing is the cheapest and most effective way to do SEO these days. Not only does writing highly quality SEO content produce links at a quicker pace than building them manually, but it’s also cheaper. Plus your content for SEO will naturally get shared on Twitter, Facebook, Google Plus Pinterest and a host of other social media sites out there.

Too good to be true right? Not in your life!

Okay, you have to pay for your Internet Service Provider. That’s all. Other things you need is your thoughts, your computer, and your hands. If you have those, nothing will stop you from typing words that will make you complete that article for your website. On which aspect of that process did you really shell out any cent? Maybe later when your electric bills arrive! 🙂

Difference Between Content Marketing and Paid SEO

You may also decide to spend some money on content marketing by outsourcing it to sites like Elance and Odesk which is not bad provided you get nothing but high quality content from them. But there is one big variance between paying to do all of the things above versus spending the money on content marketing.

Guess what that is…..

You may be surprised to hear this but it’s the real truth, your marketing content carefully crafted with SEO in mind does not get affected by algorithm updates, but paid SEO does. Search engines can tell when you provide value, and in the long run that’s the kind of stuff that they want to make sure that stays high in the rankings.

So instead of investing in short term solutions that may increase your overall rankings and traffic, why not invest in the long term marketing solution of content for SEO?

Content marketing does not only involve posting on your blog alone, you should also start guest blogging if you have not.  Guest blogging will not only give you targeted traffic and quality backlinks, it will also brand you.   A key requirement to a successful content marketing strategy is owning powerful social profiles, make sure you build up your Twitter and Facebook profiles.

Concluding Thought

Believe it or not, content marketing has become the easiest way to dominate your niche in and out, so forget about traditional SEO tactics for now and solve your reader’s problems and traffic will surely come. While writing, make sure you use a good and eye-catching headline because no matter how good your content is, if you can’t write attractive headlines, no one will read your content. Period!

  1. I couldn’t agree with you more here Theodore.

I remember just starting out and learning about backlinks and I did a bunch of article marketing but man is that ever time consuming. That’s building the links naturally though but I’ve come to learn that just by providing quality content that your readers will learn from is the best kind of content you can provide.

I’m not a big SEO gal myself but I do include keywords from time to time in some posts. I love this strategy though and agree with you 100%.

Thanks for sharing and enjoy your weekend.

    • @Adrienne,

      @Theodore,

It’s funny that you too agree that article marketing is time consuming. Do you mean writing an article and submitting it to article submission sites is more time consuming than hoping from one blog to another posting comments? Or time consuming than social media marketing?

Frankly, though I have not done article marketing for a long time, writing articles for article directories is much simpler and easier than any other. Only thing is that article marketing does not garner much results, like traffic and backlinks like blog commenting and social media marketing, on the short term. With blog commenting you could see an instant flow of traffic but not so with article marketing. I think that is the drawback with it.

But I encourage article marketing for bloggers. The good thing is that you could take a blog post you have posted a few weeks on your blog (and you are sure that the search engines have indexed) and submit it to article directories with a little re-write. Do that over time and you could open another stream of traffic for your blog!

Thanks for your insights on this topic.

      • @Chadrack,
I see your point Chadrack, but the truth is that if your main focus for submiting to article directories is to get traffic and backlinks, it will take longer time before you start seeing results, thats why I’m saying that its time consuming.

I have also done some A.M before but found it too boring.

Are you still doing A.M now? if not, why did you stop?

        Thanks for commenting Chadrack

    • Hi Adrienne,
Article marketing can be quite time consuming and i don’t think its still that effective now like before with all these google issues. I agree with you that providing your readers with useful content is the best.

And of cause, using some relevant keywords to your blog posts at one point or the other is never bad provided its not spammy.

      Thanks for coming Adrienne.

  2. Very well said,Theodore.Content marketing is the cheapest and the most effective way of marketing strategy today.I learned as well as I enjoyed reading your post. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Yeah content strategy is becoming an in thing for all SEO experts and internet marketing firms. After the Google updates quality content and natural backlinks are the most sought after. Guest blogging is a great way for one way natural link building, and getting traffic. If your website has good content for the readers, they will naturally link you back and share your posts on social sites. So focus on content marketing. Nice tips, thanks.

    • @Smith Warnes,
Absolutely, Guest blogging is the main thing now and i think its worth trying.

Have you guest posted before? and if yes, what was the outcome?

      Thanks for visiting.

      • @Theodore Nwangene, Yes I have Guest posted before. Increase in traffic and Better ranking for keywords were some immediate effects I could notice.:)

        • @Smith Warnes,

That’s great to hear! Guest blogging is truly a great way to build backlinks and drive traffic and it’s good that you were able to achieve all these with your guest posts. Is it too much if ask if you would love to write a guest post for us here? 🙂

Any way, I must say as much as guest blogging has these good points, we must be careful because I’m seeing a scenario that may not be too pleasant in the near future. I’ll soon publish a post on what is wrong with guest blogging in the face of these Google updates.

        • @Chadrack, I would love to guest post for your blog.We can discuss the topics and I am thankful to you for giving me this opportunity:-). You can contact me on my email id regarding this anytime. Thanks a ton:-)

        • @Smith Warnes,

That’s good to hear. Will get back to you!

  4. Content is king! Yes there are loads of ways to try and help your site up the Search Engine rankings but after all that you still need to have a site that contains content the user is searching for. Otherwise they’ll just click away from your site and go to the next one.

    • @erda,

I agree with you erda. Site design also plays a significant role in search rankings as it is one of the factors that determine the experience your site/blog visitors have when they visit. If your site/blog is different to navigate or not easy on the eyes, visitors will quickly click away and your bounce rate will increase giving Google a red flag about your site/blog.

      Thanks for the comment.

  5. Such a great text! I totally agree and I really like your point on the importance of the content-is-king theory, which is the only working one nowadays. Google’s penguin and panda updates have filtered the trashy sites just for SEO reasons, but if there’s valuable content and it’s updated regularly, it still works.

  6. Thanks Emma,
We just have to forget about google now and focus on providing our readers with valuable contents, ones we have such content, traffic will naturally flow.

Of cause, i don’t think the updates will affect you if you have good contents on your site.

Thanks for coming Emma, hope to see you again.

  7. Article Marketing mainly involves creating keyword targeted contents and submitting them to a variety of high quality directory websites to gain article backlinks, exposure to search engine and consequent traffic to a blog or website.
