How to Use WordPress SEO plugin by Yoast in Creating SEO Optimized Content

Step 1:    Install WordPress SEO plugin by Yoast

Ok, I’m sure this doesn’t need any emphasis. if you must use this seo plugin you just have to install it, right? So, install the plugin. You do so through your “Add New Plugin” page. Simply search for “WordPress SEO by Yoast” or you can download it here and then install.

Once you’ve installed  and activated the plugin it will show up in your “Add New” post screen like this:

I’ve marked the 3 areas you need to take note of.  These are (1) Focus keyword, (2) SEO title and (3) Meta description.

Step 2:    Create your SEO optimized content

Of course you know that the plugin will not create your content for you, right? 🙂 What the plugin does is to help you tightly optimize the content but it will never create the content! Unfortunately, this post is not a tutorial on creating content. That may be another post for another day. However, what you need is to simply create your content the way you have always done. But ensure that each post is optimized for a specific keyword phrase. Read our previous post on seo keyword research for a guide on what keyword phrase you want to use for your content.

Step 3:    Enter your target SEO keyword

Once your article is ready copy and paste it into the “Add New Post” box. I usually create my content with MS word after which I copy it into notepad to remove the unwanted codes that MS word has added. From the notepad I then copy and pasting into the “Add New Post” box. Whatever method you use make sure your blog content is ready and then head over to the WordPress SEO plugin by Yoast section.

In the plugin section enter your target keyword/phrase in the box marked “Focus keyword”. For example for this article the target keyword phrase is “worpdress SEO plugin.”

Step 4:    Enter an optimized title for your article

Next on the “SEO title” box enter a title that is specially optimized for the search engines. Indeed you’ve a title for your blog but this title is what the search engines will index as your blog title. You may decide to use the blog title which is visible on your blog. However, I usually use a different title for this. I use a title that will easily connect with my blog readers as the visible title and then enter something more optimized for the search engines in this box. For example in the previous post, the title visible on the blog is: “Organic SEO Casestudy: Helping a Swaggerlicious Kuntry Girl with SEO Rankings!” however on the search engines the title indexed is: “Organic SEO: How To Optimize Your Blog Content With Keywords!” Here’s a graphic of that article on Google:

For search engine optimization purposes ensure that your keyword/phrase is in the title. That does not mean you should go overboard to do this because it’s humans who will also read the title once it has been indexed by the search engines.

Here is what I entered for this blog post: “Wordpress SEO Plugin By Yoast: #1 for Killer SEO Content!”

Note: Your title should be about 65 characters but not more than 70.  The first title I entered was much longer and did not have the target keyword but I had to change it after the plugin pointed it out to me!

Step 5:    Craft your description meta tag

For every article indexed on the search engines there is a description attached to it. In fact I consider this to be one of the areas you must take very seriously. Most times it is this description that will compel searchers to click on your article when they see it on the SERPs. Remember that on every page of the search results there are about 10 pages all purporting to have information on what the searcher is looking. For your article to grab their attention therefore it should be able to convince them beyond any doubt that it’s the right one! So write something that will entice and sometimes amuse the searcher.

The secret to writing a powerful description is to write like a classified ad! It should be short, direct and should be able to hit on the right emotional buttons!

Again, here’s what I entered for this post’s: WordPress SEO Plugin by Yoast: Need a free but powerful wordpress seo plugin? Then go for WordPress SEO by Yoast! SEO experts vouch for it. Details here…”

Again, your description should not be more than 156 characters because, like Google, will also include the date snippets before the description in the SERPs!

Step 6:    Analyse your SEO score

Once you’ve entered the above details save your post as a draft. It is important that you do this. Don’t publish the post yet. Saving the post as a draft will enable the plugin to analyze the content and give you details about it based on the target keyword phrase you’ve entered in Step 3 above. After the post has saved the “Page Analysis” will show under the writing box. You can now analyze the result and if there is any thing to correct, do it before publishing the post.

So let’s take a look the analysis of this post:

The above was the first analysis of this post. Note the underlined comments. These are the areas I had to work on before publishing the post. You can see the result after I corrected the issue raised:

Of course there are still those 2 I should have worked on but I just decided to leave them as they are. The keyword density may be low, 0.82% but it’s  still ok. There are 1366 words in the article body and the keyword phrase appeared only 11 times. However, there are other variations of the keyword phrase. That will of course take care of the keyword density.

Using WordPress SEO plugin by Yoast this way can really be powerful or don’t you think so?

Hey, as usual I love your comments so post them below. And you can show your support by tweeting and sharing this with your friends. Will be grateful if you do.
